Kintamani
Visitors usually come to the mountainous region of Kintamani on day
trips, but it is well worth the effort to spend some time to explore
the surrounds. A massive mountain, Mount Batur , which is still an
active volcano, dominates the entire district of Kintamani. The village
of Batur was formerly sited in the Batur crater prior to a violent
eruption of the volcano in 1917 and again in 1926. Both explosions
caused much death and destruction, but also had a positive impact in
that the fertilizing properties of the ash made the soil rich. The area
has become productive in oranges, banana trees and coffee plants. The
villages of Batur and Kintamani now adjoin each other and the views are
quite spectacular.
